Restorative proctocolectomy with ileal pouch anal anastomosis

– is considered the “gold standard” in surgical management of ulcerative colitis. Ulcerative Colities only affects the large bowel, so removal of it is considered curative (Kiran & Fazio, pp. 89-90).
– is also performed for hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer (Lynch syndrome) and familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) (Fischera, 2014).
